Traditionally used as a way to carry possessions from place to place, the wooden chest gained popularity in home decor for its combination of qualities of solidity and elegance. Wood was carved and crafted together to make a beautiful pieces or art, to be used both functionally and aesthetically. Wooden chests have been used for storing all kinds of objects and materials over the centuries but their significance has been immortalised as treasure chests in story-telling. Our imaginations have been tickled with images of golden coins spilling over the edges, tantalised with precious secrets and thrilled with the possibility of finding something we’d forgotten about long ago. Bringing history to life, these chests made of wood remind us of bygone days in more ways than one. The earliest surviving folding screens are Chinese, dating from the eighth century AD. It was in Japan, however, that the dressing screen became widely developed and highly appreciated, evolving in various styles and adorned with much-loved paintings. Today, our Mexican artisans are recreating these beautiful constructions in wood and carving delightful patterns and shapes in to the finish, to be used wherever the lady (or man, of course) takes their fancy!
